How To Exercise in the Heat of Summer

Do you think it is too hot to exercise? Certain times of the day outside it could be!
Here are your strategies for summer exercise in order of importance:

1. Take advantage of the early morning. Even if the day time high is triple digits, usually you can move about comfortably when it is in the 70s outside, up to around 9AM. Maybe you haven’t had your coffee until 845. No problem, take a brisk walk around the neighborhood for the next 10-15 minutes.

2. Exercise indoors with the air conditioning on any time of day, either at the gym or at home.

3. Drink water! Did you know you sweat out around a quart of water each day? It is a wonder you don’t notice it! But this is how your body cools itself keeping you at the right temperature. AND when you exercise you can sweat out ANOTHER quart per HOUR. Wow! Know that with more heat, you will be sweating more and you will need to replenish your fluids.

Remember that sweating is great to help you detox! Your skin is a major elimination organ. Who knew?

How are you going to drink all that water? Does it give you a stomach ache? Here are some tips:

* Take sips throughout the day, especially while exercising. Keep a water bottle with you.
* Add some celtic salt around the rim of your glass with some lime juice in your water to mimic a margarita.
* Spice your water with a shake of cayenne pepper. This is a refreshing tonic.
* Drink herb tea.

4. Wear light colored, light weight clothes. Cotton is fine- it will get wet when you sweat and will be more efficient at cooling you off.

5. Sunscreen. Protect yourself from harmful rays if you are going to be outside especially midday and for more the 15 minutes. Otherwise- SOAK UP the VITAMIN D!

6. Maybe you aren’t feeling so cool, but if you wear a hat and sun glasses at least you will LOOK cool!
